Karate-do Shurenkan
offers instruction for both children and adults. We maintain a very
high standard of training. Our focus is on teaching authentic,
Japanese karate and instilling an appreciation
for the
ideals of modern
budo (martial ways).
These ideals include courtesy, respect, discipline, and a "persevering
spirit."
All general karate
classes at Karate-do Shurenkan are similarly structured. This format
was designed to allow each individual, from beginner to black belt,
the opportunity to train and advance at a pace which is unique to
them, thus making our classes open to everyone, regardless of their
level of experience.
Each class begins with a
brief period of meditation followed by a vigorous warm-up and
stretching routine designed to improve one's flexibility and
coordination. For the remainder of class, students will develop an
understanding of the methods of Karate-do Shurenkan by practicing
the three "K's" of karate: kihon (techniques), kata
(forms), and kumite (sparring). Class concludes with another
period of meditation during which students can reflect upon the
lessons learned that day.
Youth Karate (two
groups: ages 6-9 and ages 10-14)
The Youth Karate
program was designed to teach children the techniques of karate in a
fun, yet very structured manner. During each one hour class
students are taught a practical method of self-defense through the
use of training drills developed to also help improve their balance,
endurance, strength, coordination, flexibility, and stamina. While
our youth's program strongly promotes physical fitness, an even
greater emphasis is placed on the development of essential, character
qualities such as confidence, courtesy, respect, self-control, and discipline.
Adult Karate (ages 15
and up)
In the adult karate
classes, students are provided with detailed instruction in the 3 "K's"
of karate (kihon, kata, and kumite). Strong emphasis is
placed on the development of proper body mechanics to not only
minimize the risk of injury, but to increase the effectiveness of
the techniques as well. Through the use of partnered training drills
and controlled sparring, students learn sabaki (body
movement) and kuzushi-waza (unbalancing techniques) to
efficiently and effectively respond to an attack.
Conditioning Class
A one hour fitness class
designed to help participants improve their agility, balance, speed,
strength, flexibility, and endurance. These classes are intense and
include a mix of callisthenic and other bodyweight exercises,
resistance training, plyometric drills, and more.
Fighter's Training /
Tournament Prep
Fighter's training is
open to those adult students who wish to enter knockdown and
semi-knockdown competition or those who would simply like to
challenge themselves further. This class combines the traditional
wisdom and techniques of full-contact karate, with the advances of
modern sport's science. Students will find themselves involved in
weight training, plyometrics drills, heavybag workouts, focus mitt
and pad drills, body conditioning and impact training, and sparring
sessions all designed to help increase a competitive fighter's level
of performance. These classes are intense! The instructor's
permission is required to attend these sessions.
