THE
MEANING OF "SHURENKAN"
|
The name Shurenkan is composed of three
different characters.
The first character,
SHU, means "to
study, foster, or train." Its deeper meaning is that of studying or training
as a means of improving oneself, and cultivating one's intellect and
character.
The
second character, REN, also means "to refine, cultivate, or train
one's mental and physical skills, and improve one's character." However, its
original meaning was "to refine or temper crude metals." Thus, it has
the connotation of improving upon one's physical and mental skills by
tempering, much the same way as the steel of a sword is hardened during
the forging process. Through the arduous, physical training of karate, we
undergo the same process that takes a piece of soft carbon and transforms it
into a blade of superior strength and integrity.
The
final character, KAN, means "a public building or hall." Most often,
it is specifically used to refer to a public building or hall used for cultural
activities such as the martial arts.
Therefore, Karate-do Shurenkan is a hall where
people gather to cultivate the mind and temper the body through arduous training in
the art of karate.
